Update from HighStakes

18 08 2010

I haven’t played much last week. Not only because of coaching Tanja, but it was a reason as well.
After I won huge on FullTiltPoker with SuperTurbos I felt kind of doomswitched there. I was up to 14k profit. Well, what can I say. Turn 14k into 2,5k profit within some days is a lot of fun. In the end I’m way behind EV in those games, but I don’t wanna cry too much. I won big on PokerStars the same time so I am still at 16k profit for August (best was approx. 22k about a week ago).

My funny graph on FullTiltPoker:

As I said I don’t play much these days. When I play you will find me almost always only at 230-570s where I’ll hopefully grind my way to 20k+ for August. I’m at 921k VPP at the moment and hope to reach Supernova Elite (SNE) before the WCOOP will start. It’s possible to change the MainEvent ticket (worth $5,200) which all Elite’s receive into smaller buyins for other WCOOP-Events. If I’ll reach SNE in time I will play like 7 or 8 events instead of the huge MainEvent where I would be biggest fish in the tournament.
I will post my VPP-pace more often after I reached the 950k mark. I’m almost there! wooohooooo!

Actual thoughts about Tanja’s challenge:
The whole challenge is a lot of fun and I heard a lot of comments so far. From friends, from micro-regs, from HU SNG pros and – of course – from Thomas. ;)
“JoooZee” is playing almost every day, talking, thinking and reading a lot about this fun game. She is even more motivated as I thought to reach her goal and has definitely good chances to beat the $11 HU SNGs after these 2 weeks of preparation. She started playing the $6s HU SNGs yesterday and is doing there pretty well so far. I would love to take those bets you guys offered me, but of course can’t accept them, cuz there is no way to prove she is playing all the games and not me. When you rail her games and have any idea about my game you will realize very quickly it can’t be me who is playing, though. The style couldn’t be more different I guess.. ;)
I know her for 5 years already and I do know her strengths and weaknesses pretty well what makes it very easy to spot those leaks I have to teach her. Before we played the first game I was pretty sure she would be pretty passive and would try to control the risk in each game – maybe too much to make it profitable. After a couple of games it was obvious she was afraid to push all-in, so we had to take some highblinds lessons for fold/shove situations. But she’s doing awesome, improving very fast and I’m pretty sure she has a decent chance to win this funny challenge.

Stay tuned! Next post will be about how I met treezer in the beginning of January this year when we played $57.50s regularly (!) and we both thought the other one was a huge fish (compared to today we def were!). :D

glgl,
Chris

Challenge: Day 8 – Starting $6 HUs

16 08 2010

Coaching JoooZee

Day 8 – Monday, Author: Tanja

Second half has begun: Today I started with another 22 games on €2 level. This was necessary, cause of yesterday:
I already told you, that I had a bit bad luck. But it was worse. After gambling a bit, I suddenly had only hands like 35 or 24. And when there was a playable hand, even a good hand like 99 – my opponent had KK. I got 3 of a kind, my opponent 4. I got a Full House – my opponent got 4 of a kind again!

What a big fuck-up was that??? -> Chris just smiled at me, what made it even worse. Then he told me “Come on, Honey, stop gambling – you’re on tilt!”
I really didn’t know, if I had been or not. Never before, I had ever thought about being “on tilt”. But I followed his advice and stopped gambling.

Today it was different – for luck. I won enough, to switch to $6 in the evening. To do so, I first changed my whole money from € to $, therefore you can see two bankroll statuses down in statistics.

Challenge: Day 7 – RoyalFlush

15 08 2010

Day 7 – Sunday, Author: Tanja

Today’s already half time. First half is over, just 7 days left to win the challenge!

Review: During last 7 days I learned how to play HU’s step by step. I started with main rules then went on with play money games and €1 up to €2.

Today I only played €2. First I had good luck. Among other things I had my first Royal Flush today! -> Chris couldn’t believe it – he said, it’s very unlikely to have a Royal Flush during first week playing poker :-P
Later I had a bit bad luck. Well, finally my statistics for today have ended almost balanced. Read the rest of this entry »

Challenge: Day 6 – Going on with 2€ HUs

14 08 2010

Day 6 – Saturday, Author: Tanja

After pausing yesterday, I went on playing tonight. First I started with €1 games again, then after winning the most of them, I went on with €2 games. For luck, opponents on €2 are just a little better than those on €1.

Maybe it’s just beginner’s luck – but up to now I have won more than 50% of my games and I hope it will go on like this! :-) Read the rest of this entry »

Challenge: Day 5 – Taking a Break

13 08 2010

Day 5 – Friday, Author: Tanja

Today I didn’t gamble – a lot of other things had to be done. However, Chris gave me another book, I started to read.  It’s especially written for HUs and we expect, that I can improve my gamble strategy by reading it. Some of you will already know it:

HEADS-UP NO-LIMIT HOLD’EM
Expert Advice for Winning Heads-Up Poker Matches
by Collin Moshman

Challenge: Day 4 – 1€ Continuation

12 08 2010

Day 4 – Thursday, Author: Tanja

Today it’s already the forth day of the challenge. Even though I didn’t play much today, I’m already a bit used to gamble.

Contrariwise I’m still not certain, how some hands have to be played. To illustrate this situation, there can be named the first car lesson. Maybe you remember your first time driving a car: Your attention is only focussed on the steering wheel and the gas pedal – there is no possibility for you to keep an eye out on the street.

Well, what I want to say is, that I still try to play only my cards without having an eye on my opponent. But there are still enough days left ;-)

Statistics of Today
Game Amount: €1
Total Games: 11
Won Games: 6
Lost Games: 5
Start Bankroll: €49.25
End Bankroll: €49.48

Challenge: Day 3 – 1€ Real Money

11 08 2010

Day 3 – Wednesday, Author: Tanja

Ok, third day of the challenge. Time to start with real money: I received a bankroll of 50€ to start with 1€ games. I’d already read main parts of the book, Chris gave to me. And I’d also made first experiences at playing yesterday night.

Well, to tell the truth I still play foolish. At the most hands I still have no idea what to do and I don’t wanna ask Chris for any move. It’s better to talk afterwards – and every time we do he has a great deal of improving suggestions, cause of my poor game.

Besides – as you all know – opponents play very different so it’s not possible to use the same strategy for all of them. So it’s a bit difficult for my to find out, which move is a good one and which is just rubbish.

Anyway, there are still good news: At least I can already cope with my opponents on 1€ level :-)

Here’s a little statistics of today
Game Amount: €1
Total Games: 25
Won Games: 13
Lost Games: 12
Start Bankroll: €50.00
End Bankroll: €49.25

Challenge: Day 2 – Play Money

10 08 2010

Day 2 – Tuesday, Author: Tanja

Today’s second day of the challenge. Yesterday I started reading the book Chris gave to me. Through night I also got to know the main rules of poker by playing with his real poker set. So far, it seemed pretty simple.

But today, real work began: We installed Poker Stars software on my laptop and I started my first game – with play money.
Well, I don’t think, there are words, which can describe the way I played. Chris told me, that players, who gamble very poor, are named fishes. Well, I played like a pollywog. First of all, I struggled with handling the software. Moves were shown too fast for me to analyze them. And the button between “fold” and “raise” liked to change between “check” and “call”. Well, I had to learn the hard way, that there is a big difference between checking and calling $800!
The people I met where also some kind of crazy. Some of them were mainly chatting with me as doing on a dating platform – instead of playing the game. Some others only seemed to know two moves: Fold and All Inn.

During my first 3 games Chris was watching and helping me while the lowest card I got was a 7. I asked him why he did’t tell me before, that it was not possible to have hands from 2 up to 6 – he just answered with a look, like being on his wit’s end.
The next game I wanted to make it better. I told him: “I’ve got a Royal Straight” – unfortunately he did not look much happier…
He only said I had to play on my own as soon as possible – what he mend was “right now”. So I did.

To sum up my second day in challenge: There is a lot for me to do!

Little Statistics:
Level: play money
Total games: 18
Won: 12
Lost: 6

Edit by Chris:  Message of the Day: “Checking is free” ;)

Challenge: Day 1 – Getting started

9 08 2010

1st Day – Monday, August 09 2010, Author: Tanja

Ok, think it’s my turn now. I’m Tanja “JoooZee”, the crazy girlfriend, who could not hold her tongue while drinking and talking about poker .

Today is the first day of the challenge. I’ve got no idea about playing poker or about playing any other card game. I’m also not used to gamble strategy-games on the computer and I even have nothing to do with mathematical science at the university – my main study subjects are law and social sciences.

My boyfriend is playing HUs over and over and now I finally wanna know: What is he doing all day? What’s up with this game, fascinating people for years?

Is there a possibility for someone like me, who has no idea of playing poker, to learn the principle and a bit strategy of this game? Do I have the chance to get this knowledge in just 14 days training? Can I be taught to beat small level in such a short time?

Now I wanna find out: Can I beat $11 turbo HU SNGs just within a fortnight?

Today we’ll start with basic poker rules with his real poker set. Chris also gave me a dictionary to look up poker-definitions – seems to me like a complete new language! By the way, wtf is the difference between limp and call???

Chris also gave me the book “Mastering No-Limit Hold’em” by Russell Fox & Scott T. Harker. He said, it’s some kind of basic book, to get a first idea of the game.

I just read the introduction: “..we assume that you have some poker knowledge, and are most likely an experienced limit hold’em player..” “..you’ve probably read a book or two on the game, and perhaps you’re even a winning player..”

Oh my god – how can I ever cope with this??? – Ok, if I want to have any chance, I have to start right now!

Challenge: From Zero to Hero?!

9 08 2010

Imagine you get asked for a coaching by a friend who never ever played poker before, but who wants to learn to beat the $11 HU SNGs within only two weeks. Imagine it was not just a friend of you, but your girlfriend. Seems odd?! It is. And it happened to me without any time for preparation. Yesterday!
We were drinking, talking and laughing with another friend of us while I was railing the FTOPs HU MTT (“treezer” became 5th for 14k) from time to time. After the friend of us left she asked me if I could ever imagine to coach her beating the game. “Sorry? What?! I can coach you a lot honey *hrhr*. But you aren’t talking about POKER, right?!”
She never played a poker hand before. Of course I tell her a lot about my game and she reads my blog regularly, but she doesn’t even know the hand strengths so far. She is everything, but a gambler. And I honestly have no clue, if there is any chance to teach her enough during this 14 days to accomplish her goal beating the $11 HU SNGs regularly. She’s a very fast learner, pretty intelligent and always wants to reach the goals she is looking for. If there is any guy who has zero knowledge about the game, but could beat the game within 14 days, it’s definitely her!

I’m sure it’s gonna be a lot of fun and know there are some guys reading this blog who always wondered if there was any way to beat the game within a very short time of learning. Even to me the story seems super weird and funny and I’m pretty sure you will like it as well. Follow Tanja on PokerStars where she will start playing with PlayMoney and in about one week trying to beat the $2 HU SNGs with the screenname “JoooZee”.

The challenge: beating $11 turbo HU SNGs (>52,3% Wins)
The time: 14 days, Aug 9 2010 – Aug 23 2010
Updates: daily
The challenger: Tanja “JoooZee”
The coach: Chris “PlauZee”

First lesson:
The rules. Uhmm.. wtf?! I don’t even have a clue if I have ANY book about the standard rules and basics of Texas Hold’Em. Well, I will find some stuff online. But it’s true, I don’t have any plan how to start, yet. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. I still can’t believe she really wants to learn it.

From now on, it’s her story and her site and I will only add some comments or photos from time to time. Follow her story on “Challenge” in this blog where she will update her ongoings daily.
